Bruce Livesey On the 30-Year Vendetta Against Gerry Armstrong
The first time I met Gerry Armstrong, I thought he was paranoid. I’d driven down from Vancouver, summer 2007, into the verdant Fraser Valley to Chilliwack, BC, a somnolent, wind-blown town surrounded by jagged mountain ranges. A place as far removed from Tom Cruise, John Travolta and Scientology’s loopiness as one can possibly get. Armstrong and his third wife Caroline live in a walk-up, one-bedroom apartment above a tiny strip mall that’s seen better days.
When I arrived, Armstrong suggested we drive to a nearby park, rather than talk in their apartment. It was a beautiful July day and, except for a couple of stoners milling about out of earshot, the three of us were alone on the manicured grass beside a pond. Now sixty-one, Armstrong is an alarmingly small man, with elfin features, a beaky nose, sallow skin and large limpid blue eyes. The baseball cap he wore to ward off the hot sun made him look even more vulnerable. Amiable, soft-spoken with no trace of aggression, he chose his words with deliberation. Caroline seemed protective of him.

Scientology’s Suppressive Person Doctrine
Hubbard and Scientology teach that SPs comprise the most evil two and a half percent of the planetary wog population. “Wogs” are what Scientologists call the human race or Homo sapiens. Scientology teaches that Scientologists comprise a new race, “Homo novis” or “Homo scientologicus,” a much more able, aware, intelligent and ethical race than the “humanoid” wog race. The organization markets and delivers courses training Scientologists how to spot or identify SPs among the wogs they encounter in life, and then to shatter the SPs once spotted. In reality, cult leader Miscavige and his Sea Org religious police do the identifying of Suppressive Persons for shattering, and rank and file Scientologists simply obey their police arm’s SP declarations and other orders.
Scientologists are indoctrinated to proclaim that Scientology possesses the only mental or spiritual system that “works,” or has ever “worked,” and in fact produces “total freedom.” Scientologists universally are dedicated to “keeping Scientology working,” and they spend immense amounts of time and enormous sums of money to keep it working. The work Scientology claims it is performing is the “processing” of people, with its trademarked technology, from the state of “raw meat,” or wog or human being, to the most astonishingly superior and stable state called “Clear.” More processing, Scientology says, takes Clears to superperson states and “never before imagined” beings called “Operating Thetans,” or “OTs.”
A Clear, Scientology says, has achieved optimum rationality and optimum sanity, and is as far above normal wogs as normal wogs are above “institutionalized cases.” Scientology scripture promises that a Clear’s IQ has shot up like a skyrocket, about a point per hour of processing; he recalls everything that ever happened to him and anything he ever studied; and he does mental computations, as in chess, which a wog chess player would do in half an hour, in ten or fifteen seconds. Scientology says that the Clear is a created evolutionary step in man, without ills or aberrations. OTs, Scientology claims, are “at cause over matter, energy, space, time, form and life” and can operate outside their bodies. By the time I left the organization, I had reached Clear and OT Level 3, and had undergone over a thousand hours of processing to get there.
Scientology calls its system of manifold grades and levels for processing people from wog to OT the “Bridge to Total Freedom,” and all Scientologists are somewhere on that bridge. Scientology scripture, which is unalterable on this point, states that the whole agonized future of this planet, every man, woman and child on it, and the Scientologists’ own destiny for the next endless trillions of years, depend on what each Scientologist does here and now on the Bridge. The Suppressive Person doctrine declares that the only thing stopping everyone from moving up the Bridge and becoming more able, aware, ethical and intelligent, the only thing preventing total freedom, indeed the only thing wrong with this universe, is SPs.
Originating in racial dogma within Scientology’s religious scriptures, SPs form, from the Scientologists’ perspective, a religio-racial class roughly equivalent to Jews from the Nazis’ perspective. Just as the Nazis could theoretically join and leave Nazism, Scientologists can theoretically join and leave Scientology. Just as the Jews, from the Nazi perspective, however, could not stop being Jews, SPs, Scientology teaches, cannot stop being SPs. According to Scientology dogma, which Scientologists also accept as “science,” Suppressive Persons possess a genetic pathology plus a mental and psycho-spiritual handicap and morbidity that prevents them from ever being anything but SPs. The Nazis’ dogma and science concluded that the Jews were handicapped with their own set of irremediable genetics and psycho-religious malignancies that kept them from being anything other than Jews.
Scientology’s SP doctrine states that SPs are the truly destructive, truly psychotic and truly criminal of the world’s wogs, the cause of illness, at the root of every bad condition, and deserving no civil rights. According to the doctrine, the majority of people in mental institutions are not insane at all, but were put there by SPs, who are the truly insane. Wog psychiatrists and psychologists are seen as a subclass of SPs, and psychiatry and psychology are considered “Suppressive Groups,” which Scientology seeks to “obliterate.” The SP doctrine identifies archetypal SPs like Hitler, Stalin and Osama bin Laden, but also says that SPs are very average, common too, just like me, and undetected.
The “stellar examples” Scientology uses to personify Suppressive Persons are very likely what wog mental science now calls antisocial personalities or sociopaths. Hubbard in fact also used the term “antisocial personality” for Scientology’s enemies, but inside the organization the settled and universal label is “SP,” or formally “Suppressive Person.” Many of the characteristics Hubbard imputes to SPs resemble the traits that psychology and psychiatry say sociopaths possess. The majority of the people Scientology calls SPs, and treats or attacks as irredeemable criminals, however, do not exhibit these characteristics, are not sociopaths, and do not manifest antisocial personality disorders.
The people Scientology and Scientologists identify and target as Suppressive Persons are largely good, social, non-sociopathic people who have simply stood up to the organization and spoken out about its fraud, its persecution of good people, its SP doctrine, or its numerous other antisocial policies and practices. The more knowledge a person has of these things, the more he communicates that knowledge, and the more rationally and accurately he communicates it, the bigger SP he is in the view of Scientology’s leaders. The bigger an SP these leaders consider a person to be, the greater the persecution that is to be inflicted on him, and the more of the organization’s personnel and resources that are directed to that target or front in Scientology’s global war. The form and amplitude of the persecution are further modulated by Scientology’s and Scientologists’ opportunities and means, and the need to be seen as winning.
Scientology does nothing really to wage war on the world’s actual or arguably truly dangerous sociopaths. Organization leaders, in fact, recruit and form alliances with certain sociopaths, and enforce within Scientology a self-perpetuating group sociopathy. Hubbard was a sociopath, who used his God-given will and mental power to make himself even more sociopathic. He saw his own sociopathy, as perhaps every sociopath does, not as a disorder, but as an ideal condition and way of life that made everyone else, and their conditions and ways of life, inferior. He conned countless people into admiring him, slaving for him, committing crimes for him, and paying him huge sums of money to obtain the fabulous qualities and abilities he claimed he possessed and had the “tech” to impart to others. The individuals that Scientology uses its inordinate wealth and power to attack are simply ordinary people who might recognize that Hubbard’s mental states are not ideal or even superior, or observe that other claims are false, and who speak out critically about him or his organization’s system and actions despite the inevitable persecution.
Hubbard devised, built and operated a global bait-and-switch psychotherapy scam, promising amazing results and money-back guaranteed satisfaction for its mental processing “technology.” Since Hubbard’s death in 1986, David Miscavige has operated the Scientology scam. The organization claims cures of many distressing or pernicious physical and psychological afflictions, and promises “gains” of superhuman abilities, powers, awareness, memory and intelligence. Scientology extracts exorbitant fees from its customers on these promises and fails to deliver what is promised. Even worse, it also extorts money, labor and immoral or criminal activity from its customers or members with threats of doom or of being declared SPs. The organization abuses its own people, breaks up families, induces dissociation and other deleterious psychological conditions, incites fear and hatred, and damages many of its members’ physical health. Consequently, a great number of the people who have knowledge of Scientology’s destructive, antisocial policies and actions to speak out about are already its victims.
When the victims who have realized they have been victimized do speak out, Scientology leaders victimize them again, declaring them SPs and targeting them for special persecutory treatment and handling by the organization units and outside professionals established or hired for that purpose. Scientology scripture and its enforcement by organization leaders prohibit Scientologists not specifically assigned to those units as staff members or agents from having any contact with declared SPs. This is a common Scientology practice known as “Disconnection” that over the last forty years has devastated countless families, relationships and lives. Scientology scripture states that if Scientologists even so much as “grant credence” to an SP, they can themselves be declared Suppressive Persons.
Scientology scripture permits only one response to the persons who speak out about organization abuses or criminality — Attack! The outward-facing” Scientologists, or agents authorized to respond, do not address or deal with Scientology’s evils that are causing harm and being criticized, but only treat or handle the critics. Permissible treatment or handling does not include reason or empathy but only attack, since these persons are SPs. Because Scientologists not assigned to deal with Scientology’s SP critics may themselves be declared Suppressive Persons if they do deal with or grant credence to such people, almost all Scientologists are shuddered into not even listening to, or reading, what SPs communicate. It is axiomatic inside Scientology that the only wogs organization leaders attack, and employ organization personnel, agents and resources to attack, are SPs.
The philosophy Hubbard adopted to govern and justify the treatment or handling of SPs is technically and commonly called “Fair Game,” meaning that the “enemy” in that condition or status is legitimately open to attack or pursuit. Scientology’s position is that the Suppressive Person doctrine, being from Hubbard and being religious scripture, makes attack and pursuit of SPs wholly legitimate, and protected, indeed mandated, religious expression. Fair Game is the basic philosophy of war, the condition in which attacking or pursuing the designated enemy is legitimated, and failure to attack or pursue may be illegitimate or even punished. Fair Game in Scientology has also come to mean the battle tactics the organization employs against SPs, and the actions its personnel and agents have taken in their treatment or handling of SPs over the decades since Hubbard first ordered his troops to adopt and apply the Fair Game philosophy.
In his scriptures during a period in the 1960’s, Hubbard even called the treatment or handling he intended for SPs “Fair Game;” although he later ordered that the use of the term “Fair Game” be discontinued because “it causes bad public relations.” In one of his directives, which has come to be known as the “Fair Game Policy,” Hubbard stated:
ENEMY - SP Order. Fair game. May be deprived of property or injured by any means by any Scientologist without any discipline of the Scientologist. May be tricked, sued or lied to or destroyed.
Scientology has for decades claimed that Fair Game, as a philosophy, policy and practice, was cancelled, but this assertion is patently false since all that Hubbard cancelled in scripture and in application was use of the term.
Although it has unquestionably caused Hubbard and his organization bad PR, and has repeatedly been exposed in the international media and condemned in court judgments, Fair Game continues to be the only treatment or handling Scientologists are permitted to administer on SPs. The tactics and actions that comprise Fair Game in the organization’s long war of total attrition vary according to target, opportunity, availability of resources, fear of exposure or legal repercussions, the sociopathy and whims of the organization’s head, and other factors. Scientology’s state of war against SPs, however, and the Fair Game philosophy and decision necessary to wage that war, have remained constant and unchanged into present time.
Scientologists’ or their agents’ Fair Game against me in execution of the Suppressive Person doctrine include: physically assaulting me on six occasions; breaking into my car; stealing my property, including photographs, documents, a manuscript and original artwork; spying on me and my spouse; scaring our neighbors; menacing our families; threatening to assassinate me; terrorizing my companions and me on highways in California and Germany; paying a corrupt Los Angeles Police Department officer for fake authorizations to eavesdrop on me, my attorney and my associates and to tap our telephones; Fair Gaming and compromising my attorney; covertly and unlawfully videotaping me; attempting numerous times to have me prosecuted on false criminal charges based on fabricated evidence, including with the Los Angeles District Attorney, the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Prosecutor of Ekaterinburg, Russia; suing me six times; forcing me into bankruptcy; driving me from my home; obtaining unconscionable jail sentences against me and warrants for my arrest in California; forging hundreds of Internet postings over my name, including nonsense and racist messages; running endless intelligence operations against me and my family; and carrying out a global “Black Propaganda” campaign against me that extends to U.S. Federal Government departments, Members of Congress, U.S. diplomatic missions and staff, U.S. state and local government officials, foreign government officials, judges, law enforcement agencies and officers internationally, clergy internationally, media internationally, and the broad international wog and Scientologist populations.
Black Propaganda or Black PR is Scientology’s policy and practice of willful and relentless rumormongering, slander and libel, often from hidden sources. Since Hubbard’s death in 1986, David Miscavige is responsible for organization Fair Game and is the biggest hidden but actual source of the Black PR on Scientology’s enemies. The goal of Black PR, which is a basic and pervasive component of Scientology’s war, is destruction of the SP targets’ reputation and consequently elimination of public trust in their knowledge of Scientology abuses and crimes. Even if not always successful in achieving this goal, the organization’s Black PR consciously hurts its targets and collaterally threatens every potential opponent or critic. The sadism Scientology flaunts in its Black PR publications and operations has been very effective in deterring many people from standing up and disclosing their knowledge of its policies and activities.
In 1969, founder Hubbard ordered that Scientologists were to use “standard wartime propaganda” to “degrade the image” of the organization’s SP enemies “to beast level,” and to inflame public opinion into “a frenzy of hate” against them. Miscavige has the same function as Hubbard in his organization’s Fair Game campaigns: making others incite hatred, making others degrade good people to beast level, and making others do all the antisocial and criminal things that sociopaths and their hired professionals can spend a religion’s money conspiring to make others do. Like Hubbard, Miscavige runs Scientology as a dictatorship, maintained by his will and managed from his positions as commander of the military-structured but unincorporated Sea Organization and as director of a global network of incorporated “churches” and other entities.
At this time, Miscavige is titularly the Chairman of the Board of Directors of a corporation called Religious Technology Center, Inc., which claims to own Scientology’s trademarks and service marks. RTC describes itself as “an external body which protects the Scientology religion and acts as the final arbiter of orthodoxy” by “monitoring and enforcing the purity of technical application.” What Miscavige and RTC “protect” the religion from are its victims, the Suppressive Person class, and from the SPs’ knowledge of Scientology’s abuses and criminality. In the organization’s relations with the SPs, what Miscavige and RTC monitor and keep orthodox and pure in its technical application is Fair Game, and its many channels or components - Black Propaganda, legal harassment, financial ruin, disconnection, psychic and physical violence, and obliteration. Anything that appears to threaten or even counter Scientology’s, or Miscavige’s, intentions is a “matter of RTC concern” that can activate the organization’s networks and Fair Game machinery.
Because of the antisocial and criminal nature of Scientology’s Fair Game relationship with the identified SP class, which class organization leaders and their agents with their Suppressive Person doctrine have created, these leaders and agents fear public opprobrium and legal prosecution. Scientology therefore hides or cloaks many of its hostile intentions and Fair Game activities, and at its core, but webbing out through virtually every Scientologist, the organization functions as a global intelligence agency. The flow of orders and control is from Miscavige in Los Angeles downward and outward to anywhere in the world, and the flow of information and compliance with orders is upward and inward to Miscavige from around the world. Scientology leaders crave other people’s secrets, the private, personal or sensitive information of both Scientologists and wogs, and of wog governments and institutions. Scientology uses its own personnel and hired professionals as covert agents and moles to get the desired information, often by illegal or immoral means. Miscavige and his cadre operate largely in secret, with high security, codes and clandestine communication lines, files and operations.
In 1977, the FBI conducted a massive raid of Scientology intelligence offices in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. and seized evidence of operations to burglarize, penetrate or compromise over a hundred federal and state agencies and media and to terrorize a multitude of private citizens. The U.S. Department of Justice charged eleven Scientology intelligence personnel, including Mary Sue Hubbard, with various crimes against the U.S., convicted them and sentenced them to federal prison. In 1983, the Ontario Provincial Police raided Scientology offices in Toronto and seized evidence that led to convictions of a number of individuals as well as the organization itself for breach of trust stemming from espionage activities against several federal and provincial agencies or organizations including the Canadian Mental Health Association, the Ministry of the Attorney General, the OPP, the Toronto Police and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Law enforcement agencies have raided several Scientology offices in European countries, and the organization and its agents have been successfully prosecuted on a variety of charges. Germany views Scientology as a totalitarian cult whose activities are directed against the free democratic basic order, and the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, the German intelligence service responsible for that protection, keeps the organization under official observation. A 1991 Time Magazine cover article entitled “Scientology the Thriving Cult of Greed and Power” quotes the former head of the FBI’s Los Angeles office saying that Scientology “has one of the most effective intelligence operations in the U.S., rivaling even that of the FBI.”
Despite U.S. federal officials’ extensive knowledge of Scientology’s espionage activities against the government, and their awareness of Scientology’s criminal conspiracy to deprive SP class citizens of their civil rights, in the early 1990’s the U.S. decided to cease opposing the organization, and worse, to protect and promote it. It is inconceivable that this decision was made without the knowledge and agreement, or even the direction, of the U.S. intelligence community. The decision led to the Internal Revenue Service’s grant of tax exemption in 1993 to Scientology’s many corporate components as a religious organization. Subsequently, U.S. State Department and Foreign Service personnel have assisted Scientology’s efforts to operate and expand in countries whose governments viewed the organization as non-religious, dishonest or dangerous. U.S. Congressmen have introduced resolutions to condemn those countries, notably Germany, which do not embrace and support Scientology as the U.S. Federal Government does. It is apparent that since the U.S.’s strategic decision to ally Scientology, U.S. agents have improperly influenced judges and other government officials to aid the organization’s corporate components and personnel to the detriment of its victims, the SPs.
It is well observed that the U.S. Federal Government and its intelligence agencies have formed a number of alliances in recent times with unsavory or criminal organizations or even dictatorships, which Scientology is, if such relationships supposedly served some U.S. national interest greater than the national interest in not being allied to such organizations or regimes. Unsavory or criminal organizations or regimes have victims, because victimizing people is what makes organizations or regimes unsavory or criminal, and the U.S. making allies of such organizations or regimes is always to the obvious detriment of their victims. What the greater national interest was in the early 1990’s, and which apparently still exists, that brought the U.S. to ally the Miscavige regime remains unclear. The SP class is doubly threatened and victimized because the U.S. Government and its intelligence agencies now have an interest in marginalizing and thwarting SPs in order to have the decision to support Scientology against its victims appear right and just, or in some other way in the national interest.

6. I spoke with Mr. Roth by phone on November 23. He again expressed his
amazement at my story, particularly Scientology’s efforts over so many years to silence
me. He said that the station would send a car for me at noon on Wednesday, November
28, take me to the studio in Surrey, do makeup, shoot at 1:00 PM and bring me back to
Chilliwack. He said that the interview would air the following week. I questioned him
about his Scientology connections, and explained that the organization runs operations on
me and has even attempted in the past to interview me on camera to compromise or
otherwise harm me. He said he had no connection to Scientology, and that an interne at
the station had alerted him to me and my story. He said that a Vancouver Scientologist
Susan Kerr had been on The Standard previously as a representative of the Multifaith
Action Society. I told Mr. Roth about my current legal situation with Scientology, and
that I was still a target here in British Columbia, and he let me know he was unconcerned.
7. On November 28, a CHNU car arrived at my wife Caroline’s and my
apartment, and a man who said his name is Aaron (sp?) drove me to the station. I met Mr.
Roth, got shown around a bit, got left in the lounge, got made up, met Randall Mark, and
did the interview. It was a format that was new for me, three seven minute unedited
segments with a short intro to each segment from Mr. Mark. I believe I handled and
answered his questions all right, and I know for me the time seemed to evaporate. I think
he asked good questions, and seemed genuinely interested in the subject. He seemed
happy with the interview, as did Mr. Roth and Aaron, who is a technical person in the
studio as well as chauffeur. I had an opportunity to talk with Mr. Roth for several
minutes, both before the interview and afterward in his office. I’d brought with me
printouts of a number of web pages that I thought were relevant in my relationship with
Mr. Roth and Rogers, and I gave or showed him these documents and we discussed
certain facts they contained, as described in paragraphs 8 to 15 that follow.
8. Appended hereto as Exhibit A is a true and correct copy of a printout of a page
from the Church of Scientology of Canada’s “Human Rights” web site identifying
“Reverend Susan Kerr” as the “Human Rights Director for the Church of Scientology” in
Vancouver. Ms. Kerr, by virtue of her position as Scientology’s Human Right Director, is
a beneficiary in the organization’s “contract” with me and in Scientology’s campaign
over the past twenty-one years to suppress and destroy my basic human rights, and the
human rights of the many good people who might act in concert with me. Mr. Roth and I
discussed a debate between Ms. Kerr and me, or another Scientology representative, and I
said I would welcome and be glad to participate in such a debate. Over the many years
that Scientology has labeled and victimized me a “Suppressive Person” no Scientology
representative has ever publicly debated me or even publicly engaged me in reasonable
dialog.
9. Appended hereto as Exhibit B is a true and correct copy of a printout of a page
from the Multifaith Action Society’s (“MAS”) web site listing its Board of Directors,
which included Susan Kerr (Secretary) and Gale Spick (Treasurer). I knew that Ms. Spick

is also a Scientologist, and also a beneficiary in Scientology’s contract with me and in the
effort to suppress and destroy basic human rights. The listed MAS Directors also
included Terry Mahoney, which I knew to be the name of Rogers OMNI TV’s General
Manager.
10. Appended hereto as Exhibit C is a true and correct copy of a printout of page
from Rogers OMNI Television’s web site identifying Terry Mahoney as the “General
Manager of Rogers OMNI Television BC (OMNI.10).” The same page also identifies
Mr. Roth as OMNI BC’s “Senior Producer Content.” Mr. Roth confirmed that Terry
Mahoney, the OMNI Manager, had been on the MAS Board of Directors, but Mr. Roth
said he no longer was on the Board.
11. Appended hereto as Exhibit D is a true and correct copy of a printout of a
page from the Multifaith Action Society’s (“MAS”) web site listing “Partnering
Organizations,” which included “OMNI-TV.”
12. Appended hereto as Exhibit E is a true and correct copy of a printout of a
page from the Church of Scientology of Canada’s web site announcing that the
Scientology religion will be included in MAS’s 2007 “Multifaith Calendar.”
The 2007 version will include Scientology and its days of celebration
which are March 13th, the birthday of Scientology Founder L. Ron
Hubbard, May 9th Dianetics Day, celebrating the release of the book
Dianetics: the Modern Science of Mental Health in 1950; Auditor’s Day;
the second Sunday of September which commemorates the work of
Scientology ministers in bringing spiritual freedom to Mankind and
October 7th which recognizes the founding of the International Association
of Scientologists in 1984 and its purpose to expand and safeguard the
Scientology religion.
13. Appended hereto as Exhibit F is a true and correct copy of a printout of two
pages from one of the Scientology organization’s Internet sites, which show that
Scientology and Scientologists falsely and maliciously label and position me as an “anti-
religious extremist.” I explained to Mr. Roth that if he researched my name on the web he
would encounter a great deal of similar material on me disseminated by Scientology, the
cult’s agents, or people forwarding its malevolent intentions toward me. Scientology’s
term for its policy and practice of defaming its victims, and the term for the defamatory
material generated and disseminated, is “Black Propaganda” or “Black PR.” The purpose
for Scientology’s Black PR is, through the willful, organized, multi-channeled and often
covert dissemination of such material, to destroy the reputation, credibility, relationships,
livelihoods and lives of the organization’s victims or targets.
14. Appended hereto as Exhibit G is a true and correct copy of a directive in
Scientology scripture dated 16 February 1969 entitled “Battle Tactics” written by
organization founder Hubbard. I explained to Mr. Roth that this piece of Scientology
scripture contains Mr. Hubbard’s command intention for the war of attrition that the
organization’s pseudomilitary troops are to wage on the “enemy,” the people who

comprise the “Suppressive Person” class. I showed Mr. Roth some of Mr. Hubbard’s
belligerent and malevolent intentions and orders in the “Battle Tactics” scripture.
We must ourselves fight on a basis of total attrition of the enemy. So never
get reasonable about him. Just go all the way in and obliterate him.

One cuts off enemy communications, funds, connections. He deprives
the enemy of political advantages, connections and power. He takes over
enemy territory. He raids and harrasses.

The prize is “public opinion” where press is concerned. The only safe
public opinion to head for is they love us and are in a frenzy of hate
against the enemy, this means standard wartime propaganda is what one is
doing, complete with atrocity, war crimes trials, the lot. Know the mores
of your public opinion, what they hate. That’s the enemy. What they love.
That’s you.
You preserve the image or increase it of your own troops and degrade
the image of the enemy to beast level.
15. I talked with Mr. Roth about Scientology’s intention and efforts to
dominate and control the media, and warned him that the organization probably
would try to threaten Rogers into not airing the interview. I told him that in this
past summer some Vancouver Film School students had created a project to
interview me about the Scientology v. Armstrong war, and the organization had
threatened VFS and the school had made the students drop the project. Mr. Roth
assured me that Rogers would not be intimidated, and would in fact welcome a
lawsuit from Scientology. I pointed out Hubbard’s statement in “Battle Tactics”
that “A press magnate on your side is a big win,” and Mr. Roth said he couldn’t
believe that Scientology could get any press magnate on its side. I told him that
Australian media magnate James Packer had recently been identified as a
Scientologist, and Mr. Roth googled his name and confirmed this fact. Mr. Roth
let me know in a number of statements and ways throughout our conversations in
the CHNU station that he and his company, OMNI or the Rogers corporations,
were not afraid of Scientology and not concerned about any threat from the
organization.
16. I chatted with Mr. Roth in his office while the video of my interview
with Mr. Mark, I was told, was reviewed to see if it was fine or if something else
was needed from me. It was in some way announced, after perhaps a half hour,
that the interview was good, and Aaron met me to drive me back to Chilliwack.
Mr. Roth said he would send me a DVD of the show when it airs. On the drive,
Aaron and I naturally chatted about Scientology and other things, and he indicated
that he had watched the interview, understood what I was talking about, and
thought my story should be known.

17. On December 3, 2007, “The Standard’s” guest list for that week appeared on
CHNU-TV’s web site and announced my interview for Friday, December 7. Later that

19. On December 7, 2007 at 4:15 P.M. Mr. Roth left a voice mail message that stated:

couple of quick things. First off … You know what, I really need you to
give me a call back. I guess that’s the first thing.
As you would probably suspect, and as … it actually didn’t surprise me …
but … actually it has surprised me, to the vigorous nature of where this
has gone. Representatives of the Church of Scientology have contacted us,
and there’s all kinds of implied … things happening here, in terms of …
litigation, and other things … in terms of us airing the interview with you.
So I am firmly in the court that says that we are going to air this thing.
However, it is not going to air tonight. What we’re doing is going to have
our own lawyers vet this thing and then decide what’s going on. But …
you are right, these people are far more powerful than I ever thought they
were.
So, anyway just to give you a heads-up. And now, what I want you to
understand though, is do not put this on your web site or anything like that
in terms of what’s happening with us right now. Because that could cause
more problems. So at this point we’ll just keep it on the down low, in
terms of when it’s airing. And don’t … if somebody e-mails you and says,
“Hey, I didn’t see that broadcast,” or whatever, don’t say anything. Just
say, “They’re hoping to air it in the future,” and leave it like that. Because,
as I said, you say anything about Scientology contacting us it’s going to
cause more problems, that could sink this thing. So…

But as I say, I’m firmly in your court, as are quite a few of us here, and
we’ll see what happens. But at this point it’s in the hands of the lawyers,
and we’ll see what happens. But there are several avenues here to see what
… to push this thing through. So we’ll see what happens. Anyway, it’s not

20. Later on December 7, I spoke with Mr. Roth by phone. He said that
Susan Kerr had spoken with him, and had called the station’s general manager
two times. Mr. Roth said that Scientology was threatening to sue, and the station
was not going to air the interview at this time. He said Rogers will have its
lawyers look at it, and vet it. He said that if there’s something that the lawyers
decide shouldn’t be included, we could reshoot that part, and the station would
send a car for me. I didn’t tell him that on November 30, my right canine had
been knocked out, I looked like a pirate, and I’d feel like one in a re-interview
until I somehow got it fixed, which was financially out of reach. I did tell Mr.
Roth that that very day the producer of a story about me for CBC TV News:
Sunday had called and told me that the CBC had killed the story because
Scientology had freaked out the host and the CBC TV executives. I nevertheless
argued that Rogers should be courageous and air the interview as is. Mr. Roth said
he concluded that Scientology was going to sue if the interview aired, regardless
of the content, but the matter was now with the lawyers. He said that if there is
something questionable, it can be reshot. He said that, for example it’s okay to say
L. Ron Hubbard is a liar, because there’s a court document saying it. Mr. Roth
said Ms. Kerr had implied that she had been talking to a Scientology lawyer all
morning. Mr. Roth said that Ms. Kerr had faxed some stuff to the station, which
included something that had been posted on Usenet. He said that whole thing had
gotten more complicated because the Multifaith Action Society had sent a letter
on behalf of Scientology demanding that the station not air the interview. He
repeated his request that I not tell people that Scientology contacted the station
and pressured them, but only tell people the show will air later. I told him that
after the station announced the interview online I had in fact contacted several
people, including journalists, who might have an interest, and gave them the time,
channel, etc. Mr. Roth said that the person at the Multifaith Action Society who
had sent the demand was the Executive Director. I reminded Mr. Roth of his
assertion that Rogers would not be intimidated but would welcome a lawsuit from
Scientology, and he acknowledged that he had said those things. He said he had
no idea how big the organization was and how much power it had.

interview in the Vancouver-Fraser Valley areas that know about my
Scientology engagement. These include two writers from the Vancouver
Sun, one from the Chilliwack Times, a couple of Lower Mainland college
students involved in Scientology v. Armstrong pieces, and a CBC
producer, so somebody from this list might contact you. I think that if I
was a journalist I’d be all over this story, and I hope Rogers covers the
story huge, and it makes your career. So there.
I haven’t made any public announcement of the interview not airing,
although, as you know, I earlier announced the show both on my web site
and on the Usenet group alt.religion.scientology. So I’m hoping to hear
back from you about Rogers’ intentions as soon as possible.

Susan Kerr as Scientology’s representative if the interview airs.
On November 13, I sent the following e-mail letter to CBC executives
involved in the CBC’s plan to interview me November 21 for its CBC
News: Sunday program.

Gentlemen:
I want to make sure that CBC executives are aware of my legal situation
with Scientology in advance of my interview now set for November 21.
Scientology obtained an injunction against me in California Superior
Court in 1995 that (relative to the interview) prohibits me and persons
acting in concert with me from:

Facilitating the creation of any work of any kind that discusses, refers to or
mentions Scientology or any of the “beneficiaries;”
Discussing Scientology or any of the “beneficiaries” with anyone not a
member of my immediate family or my attorney.
The “beneficiaries” include all Scientology churches and affiliated
organizations and entities internationally and all of their directors, officers,
employees, volunteers, agents, representatives, successors, assigns and
legal counsel.
My position is that Scientology obtained the injunction by fraud and
duress; but even if Scientology had obtained it lawfully, the injunction on
its face is unlawful. Since Scientology is a religion, the injunction is

equivalent to enjoining an individual from discussing Christianity or
Christian churches or Christians; which is patently unlawful and judicially
unenforceable in any rational democratic country.
Scientology’s position, moreover, is that the organization and all the
beneficiaries may say anything they want about me, no matter how false
or defamatory, and do anything they want to me and I cannot respond. If I
say anything in my defense, I am in violation of the injunction.
Scientology claims that anything I say about the Scientology religion or
the religionist beneficiaries damages them in the amount of $50,000 per
utterance. The organization has been successful in getting the California
courts to award this amount in liquidated damages. This e-mail message,
for example, Scientology would claim, is worth $50,000 x 3 (recipients) =
$150,000.
Scientology has also been successful in getting the California courts to
enforce the injunction against me, and since 1997 has obtained a series of
contempt orders that have resulted in jail sentences and fines. These
contempts of court are principally for my discussions in Europe and
Canada of my Scientology religious experiences and beliefs.
I got the jail time and fines discharged at trial in 2004, but Scientology got
the California Court of Appeal to reverse the trial court. This past
September, Scientology got the trial court (Marin County, CA) to reinstate
the sentences and fines.
I want the CBC to understand that although Scientology has used the
California courts and the California injunction against me, and has
successfully maintained the injunction despite my challenges to it and its
obvious unconstitutionality and impossibility, Scientology has never
attempted to judicially enforce the injunction against “persons acting in
concert with me” or against media organizations or their personnel. See,

In my opinion, although Scientology might threaten the CBC with the
California injunction, Scientology will not take any legal action in Canada
against the CBC.
Obviously, to tell my story the injunction and other orders I’m subject to
must be dealt with. In fact, Scientology’s successful legal assault on my
freedoms makes my story as compelling and worth telling as it is, and in
the public interest. But I don’t want the CBC to be surprised by the
injunction and my legal situation *after* the interview, and *then* cancel
the piece if Scientology threatens. This would be damaging to my
position, to me personally, and to persons or media that might in the future
want to tell my story or act in concert with me.
If the CBC is fully aware of my situation, all will be well. If the powers at
the CBC are not aware of the injunction and my legal situation, I would
ask that this information be made available to them. All the relevant court
documents are webbed on my site. I am available and happy to discuss any
of these matters with CBC legal staff or anyone else.

The producer of the CBC story advised me that he had heard from the
CBC’s lawyer, who said he has no problems with the CBC proceeding
with the story, and the notion of the CBC being affected by the injunction
was “bunk.”
I believe that Rogers, CHNU, et al. are in the identical position to the
CBC.

personnel. I see on MAS’s web site that station manager Terry Mahoney is
now off the board, although it still lists OMNI-TV as a partnering
organization.
You didn’t say the ED’s name, but the MAS site says it’s Nancy A.
Chiavario, who I also see was a Vancouver City Councilor in the 1990’s.
She does not appear to be a Scientologist and should be able to understand
and welcome what I would have to say about my relationship with
Scientology.
Now that I know of the letter I would like an opportunity to respond to
what I can only guess MAS’s or Ms. Chiavario’s charges are against me.

It is clear to me that to attack me and reduce my rights and opportunities
as a citizen, the Multifaith Action Society has willfully and foolishly
violated its own primary aims, including promoting dialogue and
understanding, and advocating for marginalized citizens or groups. MAS’s
reaction to the announcement that I was going to be interviewed on The
Standard is a subject I’d hope Rogers and you would use for an
investigation and another show.
I have been willing at all times to talk to any Scientologist to promote
understanding in the Scientology v. Armstrong war. Not one Scientologist
has been willing at any time to talk or dialogue. Scientology head David
Miscavige has never permitted it. The only communications from
Scientology or Scientologists over 26 years are fair game and black PR.
MAS should be doing what it can to get Scientology to change its
obstreperous policy and position so that dialogue and understanding can
occur, rather than assisting Scientology to suppress and destroy my rights.
I am the marginalized citizen in this society and paradigm and
Scientology is the bully cult doing the marginalizing. MAS should be
urging CHNU and Rogers to give me a voice and make my
marginalization and my marginalizers known.

28. On December 17, Mr. Roth called and we spoke for a few minutes. I
said I’d called to clarify or verify what had happened. He told me that as part of
Rogers Media’s expansion and acquisition of a number of other TV stations, it
had been compelled, or agreed, to sell CHNU, pending CRTC approval, to Vision
TV. Mr. Roth said that the takeover was set for sometime in February, 2008. He

said that consequently Rogers is doing as little as possible and putting no money
into the station. He said that Rogers’ attorneys had made the decision to not air
the interview purely because of money, and that there was no more money to put
into legal matters. He said that the attorneys had found that Scientology had
brought over thirty legal challenges to Canadian media outlets and have won most
of them. Mr. Roth said that he had personally argued that the interview should air,
spoke his mind, and thought he might get kicked out for his dissenting point of
view. He said that two Rogers lawyers were involved, and one was a top lawyer
for Macleans, which he said Rogers owns. He said that when Vision takes over
there could be an opportunity for the interview to air, but that there would be no
changes overnight. I asked if he was going with the station when Vision takes
over, and if Vision was going to maintain The Standard and Randall Mark, and
Mr. Roth said it was unknown. I reminded him how he had really thought it was
like, “Bring it on, we’re Rogers,” and he acknowledged that what I had said about
Scientology; that is, its power, aggression and intention to silence me in
particular, was right. He said he would make me a copy of anything Scientology
had delivered to him about me, and he agreed to scan the documents and e-mail
them to me as pdf documents. I asked him if he could also send me what the
Multifaith Action Society had sent to the station about me so I can respond, and
he said he couldn’t. He did confirm that the MAS Executive Director who had
demanded that the interview not air was Nancy Chiavario. Mr. Roth said that the
Multifaith Action Society has actually apologized to the station, and I said that
they didn’t apologize to me, and that they’re doing with me what they proclaim
they’re opposing. I said I looked forward to meeting with them. He said the
Multifaith Action Society matter is closed as far as the station is concerned, and
he said something about not wanting to go down that rathole. Mr. Roth asked
what had happened with the CBC. I said that the same thing had happened as with
Rogers although not because of an overt threat from Scientology as he had gotten
from Susan Kerr. I said there had been a covert approach from Scientology to the
CBC, and that what I’d been told is that everybody all the way up to the top
started freaking out. I said that now the CBC execs were having the realization
that Mr. Roth had been having, that Scientology is a lot more powerful than he’d
thought and what I’d been saying about the organization had been right. He asked
if the CBC was just cutting part of the interview, and I told him they have killed
the whole show. I told him that had involved going to the University of Alberta
and interviewing Professor Stephen Kent, and coming here to Chilliwack and
spending two days here with their team. I told Mr. Roth that they had interviewed
me one day and did setup shots the second day. I said that during the project they
were also in touch with Scientology. I said that Rogers and the CBC being
shuddered into silence was threatening to my position and created an even more
threatening environment than what was there before. I asked him who has the
courage to put my words out there. Mr. Roth acknowledged how threatening
Scientology is, and asked what was possible for me to do. I said that the kind of
public exposure that he and the CBC offered would be a huge thing. I said that if
everyone in the world said, “Hey, let Gerry Armstrong talk!” Scientology would
be silenced on the issue. I said that society itself, public opinion, could do that,

and that, beyond that, it could also go into legal, and it could go into international
relations. I told him I believed that the truth is that Canada ought to be standing
up to the United States on the Scientology v. Gerry Armstrong issue. I asked the
question, “What are they doing sending a Canadian citizen to jail for talking about
a religion?” and I described Scientology as an organization that benefits more
from the mantle of religion than any other organization in the world. Mr. Roth
asked if I was trying to find a lawyer, and I said that I’d been trying for many
years, and that lawyer hadn’t been easy to find. Mr. Roth asked if the CBC filmed
anyone else for my story, and I said Steve Kent. I asked Mr. Roth, if Ted Rogers
drops by, or Mr. Roth has the opportunity, to ask Mr. Rogers to bypass his
lawyers on this one and go to the mat. Mr. Roth protested that he couldn’t do that,
and I said he could because now what’s going to happen is that I have to tell the
story of him and me, of how it ultimately goes down, and pulling the plug on
some 21 minutes which have just been made probably the most famous interview
The Standard ever did, the one that no one can see. I told Mr. Roth that it’s going
to become valuable. I asked him to confirm that Rogers owns the interview and he
did. I told him thanks, that it was nice to know him and be in touch occasionally,
and we said goodbye.

extraordinary action of seeking to silence my voice, suppress my rights
and support my marginalization.
I also request that MAS facilitate an opportunity for me to talk to its board
and membership about the situation with Scientology here in B.C. and
around the world to which MAS is so intimately connected. It was within
this situation, Scientology’s long war on the good people who comprise
the religion’s “Suppressive Person” class, that MAS took its extraordinary
action. Such an event and discussion would align with MAS’s primary
aims, and could not help but be educational for all participants, as well as
an exciting and extremely timely topic.
I am aware that it has been claimed that whatever action MAS took to stop
Rogers from airing my interview was done without MAS Board approval,
although apparently done because of pressure or manipulation from
Scientologist board members. Toward the goal of transparency, I will
therefore send this letter to board members whose contact information I
can find. I would also ask, however, that, because of the nature and
urgency of this matter, and my important requests to you herein, you
forward this letter officially to each board member.

web site, and a woman who identified herself as “Nancy,” and who I understood to be
Nancy A. Chiavario, answered the phone. I gave her my name and asked her if she knew
who I am? She said no, so I said I am an ex-Scientologist, and she then said that she
knew who I am. I said that I was very much interested in having a communication with
her organization, with its directors. I told her that she could probably gather that this
matter is very important for me, and she said yes. I said that I thought I deserved a

response and a communication, and even a hearing out, and that she probably knew that I
have not received one. She said she didn’t deal with such matters, and I asked who does
then. She told me that she had my letter, and I asked if she has passed it on to the MAS
board. She said she had not, and I asked why that was. She said that it was because the
letter wasn’t addressed to the board. I asked her if she handles the mail and she said she
does. I asked her if I hadn’t requested within the letter that it be forwarded to the board,

game and silence. It should be clear that the disdainful way you and MAS
have treated and handled me evidences an antisocial problem in your
organization that requires public illumination and airing, and I will be

Your Executive Director’s e-mail message below is simply disingenuous
and unbelievable.
When I spoke with Ms. Chiavario on February 28, she did NOT tell me
that my December 18, 2007 letter, which I sent by Canada Post and
addressed to her, had been discarded unopened by her. She in fact said on
February 28 that she had my letter right there, but would not open it and
would not forward it to the MAS Board of Directors as I requested. She
very well may have discarded the letter now, but she did NOT say she
already had discarded it; whereas she DID say that, as of February 28, she
still possessed the letter.
In any event, your Executive Director is willfully putting Multifaith
Action Society at risk, and rendering each MAS Board member ignorant,
by discarding any mail, unopened or not, that your society receives;
especially correspondence concerning a very serious matter that so affects
your society’s reputation and involves your society’s knowing
mistreatment of a Scientology victim on that organization’s behalf.
It is not credible that Ms. Chiavario had not previously received my e-mail
letter of December 18, 2007. My December 18 e-mail (below) went to the
same e-mail address as my letters of February 28, 2008. Ms. Chiavario
indicates that she is able to forward my e-mails received at that address to
the MAS Board. If she had not seen my e-mail of December 18, how
would she know what my letter sent by Canada Post contained in order to
discard it without opening its envelope? OT abilities? Even if she is
merely driven by some blind hatred for me, or blanket contempt for
Scientology’s victims, she should not be in a position where she can stop

important communications from getting to the MAS Board, or where she
can originate attacks on people that involve your society.
I ask again that the MAS Board contact me and make arrangements with
me to provide an opportunity for me to address the Board and any
interested MAS members, in order to clear the air, clear my name, and
hopefully put an end to your society’s abetment of Scientology in its
efforts to silence and Fair Game its victims.

The Ben Barrack radio show, January 27, 2008
A week ago, Ben Barrack, a radio show host in Temple, Texas, sent Caroline and me an e-mail saying he’d happened across our Suppressive Person Defense League site while researching the acronyms Tom Cruise used in a video, particularly “SP,” and asked if one of us would appear on his show.
Following the arrival and rapid spread of Tom’s recruitment video on the Internet, SPDL unique visits went to over forty times the site’s previously recorded daily highest ever, so it’s reasonable that the media would have an interest. SPDL is the most comprehensive, document-supported site addressing Scientology’s Suppressive Person doctrine. Cruise has been very helpful in bringing this mad and dangerous doctrine into public consciousness.
I checked out Barrack’s home page, and saw that his trademarked theme is “Let’s Talk About Something Important!” http://www.benbarrack.com/ I also saw he was uncensoring Hillary, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t want to talk about the SP doctrine. So I called him and we chatted a few minutes and I agreed to be on. He said he has an hour show Sunday mornings at 7:00 a.m. Central Time and wanted me for the segment at 7:20, 5:20 Pacific Time.
